In Absence There Is
Through the lens, I seek out what often escapes attention: the peripheral, the unnoticed, the spaces between. Reframed, the ordinary becomes charged with another kind of seeing. Absence begins to reveal itself as a form of presence. Nothing is without voice or expression. What first appeares incidental slowly reveales itself as a visual language, a living graphic expression of the worlds we inhabit and unconsciously author together.
This ongoing series reflects more than twenty years of photographing the overlooked spaces that exist
between intention and accident: the afterthoughts, residues, interruptions, and quiet imprints that shape the surfaces of daily life. Tracing the quiet vestiges of human presence, the work considers the fleeting impressions through which we continuously shape, and are subconsciously shaped by, the environments we move through.
These images were captured during many wanderings through my neighborhood, using a Canon EOS 5D Mark III paired with a 24-105mm F/4 lens.
