Fact of Matter

Over twelve years, I have documented and archived temporary color-coded markings left behind during moments of urban excavation and repair. Standardized as recently as the 1970s as a language of protection and coordination, these markings trace the hidden infrastructures and currents that sustain collective life.

In Fact of Matter, I approach the city as a living body whose internal systems mirror our own. Removed from their original contexts and brought into relation with one another, the markings shift from utilitarian notation into a landscape of
color, gesture, and form. Fragmented symbols begin to resemble abstract cartographies, emotional diagrams, or sigils.

Fading, overwritten, and erased, the markings become records of repair, transformation, and continual negotiation, briefly revealing the hidden movements through which urban life renews itself.

These images were captured during many wanderings through my neighborhood, using a Canon EOS 5D Mark III paired with a 24-105mm F/4 lens.

a rhythm of living, the quiet, still, cavernous places, known to each of us.
